Happy bird day

No exciting birds, but the every day ones are fun too.
These are from Friday actually--it was too cold yesterday to go out!
Do you remember that the male red-bellied woodpecker would have nothing to do with the suet basket when I moved it to the new feeder system? Well, Mrs. red-belly has no such problems.
You can tell it's her and not him because the red doesn't go all the way over the top of her head. I think they have babies already maybe because they are so busy feeding all day.

Of course when I moved to get a closer shot, she was off in a flurry of feathers.

There is dialog on these cardinal photos, so you may have to click them larger to see. They were done originally for an email.

This female purple finch hung around for the cold weekend we had--the rest have all gone north already.
She's pretty, but the patterns on the little chipping sparrow are even prettier.
Uh-oh!! Bad news! A brown headed cowbird!! Thank goodness, only one. They are such seed hogs, to say nothing of parasitizing other song bird nests. I hope he doesn't bring a lot of friends.
A tufted titmouse hammers away at a seed held between his feet.
But always keeps a wary eye on the sky for predators.
Whew! It was only a turkey vulture's shadow.

  1. Hi Bruce. This was a fun post. I loved the series with the dialog - don't you know that's what they are thinking! Enjoyed it.

  2. I take my hat off to photographers who can get good bird shots. I use a small compact digital and I must say, I've never been able to use it for birds. Maybe that's one reason you see more botanical posts. Thanks for your comments. Cheers.

  4. Well done! I really like the pictures of the red-bellied - especially the first one because it's so unusual to see them perched like that and not against a tree trunk or on a suet feeder. The one with the feathers in motion is pretty cool too. Great shots of the cardinal - cute captions. Nice to see that the purple finches are still hanging around. Cute little titmouse. He's looking very curious about something.

  5. Thanks, Birdlady--I'm glad you enjoyed the dialog. I like to see the humor in things.

Thanks, Steve. I use a point and shoot camera too, but have more trouble with macro than birds.

Thanks Travis. I thought I had already linked to you. I'll do it now.

  8. I've had a few cowbirds recently, but the male bluebird is running them off since he has a nest near by. Love your stunning photos of your feeder friends!

  9. Very nice....the woodpecker is stunning. They seem to really like that new feeder system. They don't realize that we only feed them, so we can have the fun of photographing them :-) A nice variety of birds for the day! Good dialog...the cardinals and sparrows seem to like gossiping with each other :-) Mine have a special bush they hang out in together.

  16. The dialogues are cute and your bird pictures are lovely! By the way, is that Sparrow a White-crowned Sparrow that caused a Big
twitching scene in England in the recent times ?

  17. Thanks Gall--I've forgotten how to spell your first name again. No, that's a chipping sparrow--smaller than a white crowned. We don't see the white crowned much here in the south eastern part of the US.
