This bald eagle nest is a new one for us to know about. Too bad--it's only ten minutes from the house and we could have been watching it all winter. This year's youngster is about to fledge already.
The nest is easily seen from the road, but is about a hundred yards into the pine woods.
The young eagle was very cooperative and sat up on the edge of the nest for good viewing. My pal had her 80 power 'scope with her and we could count his eyelashes wth it practically. This is the best my little Sony could do.
Suddenly without us seeing where it came from, an adult eagle swooped in with a nice fresh fish and the two of them tore into it. They ate for about fifteen minutes.
We only got this tourist view of the adult unfortunately--you can see the white head between its legs just a bit. As soon as they finished the fish, it flew away.
Wow...again...That is a cool nest and great shots of it and the birds. Great to know that there was a baby hatched, too. Hopefully you will see a lot more action there now that you know about it. We got to see a nest in the Seattle area last summer while on a boat trip with a guide. The parents were there, but my pics weren't great. Fascinating birds!
ReplyDeleteFantastic, Bruce! At least you know about them now. Keep us posted!!
ReplyDeleteA great series Bruce, even the "tourist" view is wonderful....and catching them eating too!!! Well done!!
ReplyDeleteThis is exciting! I'd give my eye teeth to see an eagle's nest up close.
ReplyDeleteThanks, SA Joan! I went again today and saw the baby, but no adult. It's exactly ten minutes from the house, so can easily be checked. But the season is nearly over.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bobbie. As they say, come on down! There several in the area. February would be a better time though.
AWESOME SHOTS, you have such great closeups, it's just increcible to see them that close!! Lucky you!!
