C is for Cormorants

It was a good day at Bear Island for cormorants. These are all double crested cormorants--the only one we have around here except for a rare great cormorant passing through.
These cormorants are resting on a 'rice trunk'. This mechanism was used to irrigate the rice fields with fresh water as it came down the river, and by closing it, the salt water, coming up with the tide, was excluded. The wildlife management people still use the trunks to control vegetation growing in the impoundments, principally to attract migrating ducks.
These photos look better clicked to larger so you can see the detail on the birds.

The dark one on the right is an adult male.
