Today really felt like spring here.
Before we went to church we enjoyed the gold and purple finches that are at the feeders now. This is a part of the group under the feeders. You really need to click on it to see it larger to get the effect--the ground was alive!

Then in the afternoon a friend and I went to Caw Caw Nature Interpretive Center. The water was very high in the old rice impoundments and we didn't see many birds, but we had a very nice walk.

One little blue heron was very cooperative. Another sign of spring was seeing his purple neck and long breeding plumes.

It was warm enough that there were even a few alligators were sunning on the banks of the marsh. This was a big one--probably ten feet/3 meters long.

This was the best harbinger of spring though--Carolina jessamyn in bloom. This is our state flower and is always the very first thing to bloom. It's a native vine and sprawls all over the woodlands.

  1. WOW! Those ground feeders are really incredible! That is a lot more action than I get below my feeders. I love all the color -- Goldfinches and Purple Finches. Fun stuff!

  2. Fabulous posting, Bruce. What a great day!! I can't believe all of your finches. No wonder I don't have any. They're all at your house. LOL Nice to see all the wildlife you got to see, and the Carolina Jessamine is just icing on the cake!! Wooohoooo! It's springtime in Charleston!!

  3. Thanks Scott and Lin. The finches are really something to behold. When a hawk swoops through (or if I try to see them not through a window with my camera) they explode into the air in all directions like fireworks.
