Siskins and goldfinches

A strong front is pushing through the area today with high winds and scattered rain. It's supposed to be very bad tonight. But it's an ill wind that blows no good. It brought in the first pine siskin that I've seen in a few years!
Here it is on the 'thithle thock', as we call it, even though it's filled with nyger seed these days. The lower bird is a goldfinch starting to turn yellow for spring.

These look a lot better when you click to enlarge them.

  1. Good shots! I don't see many pine siskins anymore either. I used to see a lot of them when the goldfinches arrived, but not anymore. Great sighting. I hope he sticks around for you!

  2. Thanks SP. I was very pleased to hee him. We've never had very many here though--just the occasional straggler.
Have you seen the terrific bird pictures on this blog?

  3. That's so smart! Did you make the sock or buy it? I love the way it lets the birds clasp on. Very clever.

  4. My finches never seem to like those thistle socks for some reason. They prefer the sunflower seeds laid out in easy reach on the deck rail...lazy!

  5. Thanks, Bruce. Yes, I have her on my list of blogs. Did you read the story about Sam, too? If not, check out "Sam's Song" and the beautiful picture of him catching snowflakes. It's unforgettable.

  6. Thanks for your comments, guys. Mary, my goldfinches much prefer the sock--I think thistle seed is almost like catnip to them.
Kathryn, the sock was purchased at one of the big pet chain stores and it's lasted three seasons already!
SP, thanks for telling me about Sam's Song--I'll go back and check it outl
