Along with the gold finches, there are still some female purple finches, but the pine siskins have moved on for sure.
Bluebirds are actively building in one of our boxes! Yay! I hope I can discourage predators in some way. It's been suggested that I put a two foot wide circle of sand all around the pole--that snakes don't like crawling on sand. I'll do that.
The deer are appearing nearly every morning now, although usually too early for enough light to take good pictures. Our Dobe, Comet, sees them first and comes in and all but says to me, Get the camera! He sees them by sticking his head out the railings of the back deck even though they are way out front. He then leads me to the front door so I can go out and try to get some pictures, just like Lassie. The deer seem to be used to me now and didn't even run away as i walked around on the front deck trying to get shots of them and the bluebirds.
So now you know what to do when you are mad at the computer! The camera can kill those blues!
Hi Bruce, see, where there's a will there's a way and you did it!! You have such a variety of wildlife. I've never seen a stork like that before, it's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOh, your deer are so precious, too. What a lovely shot of them!
Let's hope the little Bluebird is safe. Hope the sand works for you.
Great post!!
Great pictures! I love the bluebird...I haven't seen one yet but I'm looking everyday! I finally saw a tufted titmouse for the first time several days ago! Can you tell I'm a newbie with the bird watching?...LOL..
ReplyDeleteAngie
Yay, you have a nesting Bluebird! I have been thinking about some sort of blind. What did you get?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures, Bruce! Comet is so adorable! I love all the stories and pictures you send. Gorgeous little finch. I know you usually say that you don't get to see them in their full colors. I love the shot of the Bluebird, too. It's fun that you're seeing so many deer now.
ReplyDeleteSo good to have you back on-line Bruce! I kept checking for your return :-) I'm glad you spent all that time with the camera because the pictures are worth it. I wonder why the finches don't stay where you are? I have them all year and I would think our climate was somewhat the same. I can see you will enjoy that blind a lot..the wood stork is really neat! And the bluebird is beautiful! How nice that you get "alerts" when the deer come so you don't miss them :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the nice comments and encouragement, All.
ReplyDeleteAunt B--the woodstorks have only in recent years been seen in SC. They have run out of habitat in FL and are nesting in this area now.
Keep up the good work, Angie. It's a wonderful hobby.
You're right about the blogging community, Ocean.
Jayne, the blind is made for hunters actually--can't recall the brand at the moment. It is all camo colored and has windows with camo netting so you can see and a built in chair. It only weighs 12 pounds so you really can take it with you. The best part here I'm finding is that the gnats and mosquitoes can't get in!
SP, I will have so many gold finch pictures, I will have to burn a CD just of them. Each day I take more thinking they will be gone tomorrow! And each day they are still here and yellower and yellower.
I'm amazed what great bird phtos you can get just from your backyard. The stork is really a great photo!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you are back to "normal" again. LOL!! These are such beautiful birds, I hope I have just as nice ones at my new place. We will have to see what summer brings.
ReplyDeleteYes! Your goldfinches are almost all yellow, ours are still in the ugly change-over stages, Love your wood stork!!!! The deer are always a welcome sight to me. I really love to capture them. The camera can cure the moody blues for sure! Especailly when you see something different or beautiful as you did.
ReplyDeleteWhee! More nice comments!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked the stork, Linda, having the blind was the secret for that. Don't forget that my backyard is ten acres--that helps too!
Thanks, Bird Girl (I always read that as Bad Girl......LOL). When you get going with the camera, you can forget everything else for sure.
LOL SA Joan--you know what my 'normal' is. I can't wait till you move out into the country in a couple of weeks. I think I'm as excited as you are--I would love to have my ten acres be in southern Africa!
Thanks Jalynn, nice of you to come see my blog. Glad you liked the pictures. The deer were out again this morning too. How many pictures of the same seven deer can a computer hold!
